paris (the best fashion week) and the Sartorialist

One of the best things about fashion week by far are all the fashionable people you see walking around the tents for the shows. This is the case especially in Paris. These photos bring back memories of walking around the Tuileries in Paris last March... ::sigh:: These photos are courtesy of The Sartorialist.

This woman is a joke. I am nervous for her this Thursday at the VP debate with Biden. She is going to humiliate herself.

milan fashion week: i heart etro

Milan is usually the sexiest, glamest, over the top fashion week of all. think bold colors and barely there tight dresses and minis at versace, d&g, cavalli, etc. but etro is a more understated sexiness, which I just love

I adore veronica etro's prints, her beautiful flowy springy dresses.
collection has some far east inspiration. it's beautiful.

Jourdan dominates London Fashion Week

Jaeger Spring 2009

but sadly the only black face...

We frequently hear about the lack of black models cast in runway shows, editorials, or campaigns and London Fashion Week exemplifies exactly what we are talking about even further. In Paris and New York we see Miss Dunn as well as other black faces including (of course) Chanel Iman as well as Sessilee Lopez, Georgie Badiel, and up-and-comer Wakeema Hollis among others.

Hollis @ Benjamin Cho & Georgie Badiel @ Christopher Kane

However on the London catwalks, Britain's own Jourdan Dunn dominates.

British-born model Jourdan Dunn was the only black model to have repeatedly walked the LFW catwalks. She recently told Style.com:

"Luck is on my side that I keep getting cast, but there are so many beautiful black girls. I don't understand why it's always only me and maybe another girl who are chosen."

London Fashion Week may now be over but the fall-out over its obvious lack of black models has only just begun. While a model of colour could scarcely be seen at New York, the situation in London appears to have only strengthened the argument that the fashion industry doesn't truthfully reflect these cities and the people who represent them. This has led outspoken designer Katharine Hamnett to blast the industry in the Guardian:

"The catwalks are full of white dogs. Cosmetic companies don't like black models - the racist bitches. I have no idea why when it's obvious that black girls are just so genuinely much more beautiful than Caucasians, who have clearly got the short straw. Black girls have much better body shapes and it's such a shame. I just think there should be a bit more of a balance."

Our Little Project Runway star and season 4 winner debut's his Spring 2009 RTW collection!

Remember the young, spunky, fun, overly gay Christian from last season's PR? Yes, he made the show. He was fabulous, conceited, obnoxious, and we couldn't get enough of him. The young designer debut's a beautiful spring collection with voluminous chiffon dresses and slate colored skinny pants... im in love with his play on proportions <3

"FIERCE!"

and today the PR finalists from Season 5 will debut their collections in Bryant Park as they vie for the spot as Project Runway Winner.

"laugh at life. stand in the mirror and just smile" - a. larrieux

The Lovely Miss Amel Larrieux

Last night I saw Amel Larrieux perform at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. It was truly an amazing set. I saw her perform last summer at the 930 club as well, but I think last night's set was more enjoyable and more intimate. Her music is that smooth, soulful, jazzy sound that puts you in a good mood and makes you feel grown and sexy. She definitely stays under the radar and has a smaller, devoted fan base that cherishes her unique sound and style.

She opened the show proclaiming herself to be "quirky" and "full of personalities." She opened the show with a song from her album Lovely Standards entitled, "I like the sunrise," a Duke Ellington cover. In fact, the entire album is her cover of various jazz songs including Ella's, "You're My Thrill," and "If I Were a Bell." The rest of her set was from previous albums including, Earn My Affections, For Real, Bravebird, No One Else, Gills & Tails, and Make Me Whole. She closed the show with the popular hit Tell Me from her days as lead singer of Groove Theory.

I shot a video of "I Like the Sunrise" and posted it on You Tube. ENJOY!

highlights @ bryant park

Chanel Iman and newcomer Sessilee Lopez (featured all over Vogue Italia's July 2008 issue)strut their fierce selves on the runways of Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg. Marc Jacobs is channeling some weird eclectic mix of flannel and other bold patterns...first impressions? And of course, DVF never disappoints us with her with her amazing dresses. I love this rainbow inspired one.

two of my favorite la girls front row at Proenza Schouler. Our girl mk has put on a little weight and she looks great. Easy on the pout though... both of their shoes are fierce.

i like seeing this- mk chatting it up with John Legend at the Rock n Republic show.

remember my herve leger obsession? the bandage dress- the one where you need to be a size zero to pull off... well for spring, max azria is back at it again. This style never gets old. This was my favorite one from the collection. Someone spot me a G so I can get it ;)

Spotted: Becks and J. Lo front row at Marc Jacobs. Do we love Becks' new fierce crop? It's a pixie style cut reminiscent of twiggy circa the 60's. Will Katie Holmes follow suit soon enough? lmao

and because I love the PS guys so much....

Proenza Schouler

I am in love with Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of the New York fashion house, Proenza Schouler. I fell in love with them a few years ago while watching Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week coverage on the style network. Their tailoring, the silhouettes, but most of all the body hugging corset tops with the most flattering necklines I have ever seen. They are young, fresh, hip and I plan to be a devoted customer when I can afford the $1000 price tag.

The Label
This modern luxury label offers an edgy, youthful take on upscale dressing. The design team of Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough—self-proclaimed “dorks”—has only been in business since 2002, but they’ve already enjoyed numerous hit collections, and a rep as one of fashion’s most talked about labels. The duo met in design school, worked with Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs respectively, then partnered on their graduation project; the rest is history. It helps that their talent matches their hype, and that their collections showcase their skillful detailing. Some of the line’s most current pieces, sleek and minimal silhouettes with a soulful cheekiness, are redolent of the mod-ness of Courrèges, (a black-and-white cashmere mini-dress), or Paco Rabanne (a chain mail tank.)
The Look
Young and sporty, with a somewhat mod nod to cheeky sixties pop fashion icons. Tailored coats in lush menswear pattern prints, thin pencil skirts, color-blocked chiffon evening gowns cinched with satin belts, and sleek minimal silhouettes that mostly come in dark neutrals like bronze, battleship gray and military green.
The Designer
Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough met in 1999, while in design school at Parsons. They partnered up for their thesis project, calling it by their mothers’ maiden names, Proenza Schouler, and a collection was born. Hernandez, who hails from Cuban Miami, originally pondered becoming a doctor, while McCollough, from suburban New Jersey, was intent on blowing glass. Luckily, they found each other: The design duo were presented with the CFDA’s Perry Ellis Award for new talent in 2003 and have shown to critical acclaim with each subsequent season. nymag.com

men are prone to assholedom

We complain day in and day out about the terrible behavior of men-- their cheating ways, their lack of caring and empathy when it comes to us women, but could it maybe NOT BE THEIR FAULT? I think it's pretty far-fetched, but a new research study on mice from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm reveal that there is a sort of "cheating gene" present in 2 out of every 5 males and men who carry this gene are more prone to marital dysfunction and potential divorce. If you have two copies of the allele you are twice as likely to be an asshole. This specific allele regulates the activity of a hormone in the brain and can affect a man's attitude toward fidelity and monogamy.

So basically, this study excuses men's behavior as being merely a biological defect or something. EEEHHHHH. Nope- men's behavior and attitude towards marriage and women has to do with morals, upbringing, and integrity. I need more proof before I believe that some gene or lack thereof causes assholedom.

I guess John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Eric Benet, and all the other cheaters carried that gene...

And I will continue to be cautious when it comes to men.

excited for fall fashion

I had the privilege of attending Paris Fashion Week for fall/winter '08 '09 collections in Paris last spring. I attended Jeremy Scott, Givenchy, and John Galliano shows and went backstage at Galliano where I met the lovely Chanel Iman and Irina Lazareanu. And while we were gearing up for spring fashion at that time, I couldn't wait for fall dressing-- the coats, the jackets, the boots, the layers-- it's the kind of dressing I yearn for in 90 degree DC summer weather. I love Mary Kate Olsen's style and lately she has been channeling a sort of 90s grunge style. While I can't relate to that style in its entirety, I do love the idea of pairing a baggy flannel shirt with super skinny bottoms (tights, leggings, skinny jeans, leather leggings, etc). Something about that look pleases me.

so clearly (my previous post as evidence) the Marni pumps and Chloe bag I am lusting for are just a dream for the time being...ahem... for the time being.... Goodness i love mk

Another fashion obsession are Herve Leger "bandage" skin tight dresses. They hug the body in such a sleek, sexy way and fit like a glove. Here are two from the Fall collection that I really liked.

style.com

Here are some more summery styles as worn by LilO, Kate and Becks

and finally- Agyness Deyn, Harper Bazaar's Model of the Moment. You recognize that bleach blonde crop on the fashion runways. Her style is punk, colorful, loud and a little kooky. She's quirky and fabulous. and she's friends with our girl Chanel Iman.
